Prom – a very important event in a young adult’s life


In North America, a prom (short for promenade) usually refers to a semi-formal dance party held to celebrate the end of an academic year. In the UK, the prom was usually is a season of classical concerts or “proms” held between July and September since 1895.  The British equivalent of the American occasion would be the Leavers’s Ball, Valedictory Dinner, Leavers’ Dinner or just the Leavers’ Do. Usually, there is a Junior Prom held for those leaving the 11th grade and a Senior Prom for high school. This trend is said to have originated in Cambridge where schools held a “School Ball”. This is now called the School Prom. The trend of School Proms really took off in UK around the late 1990s.
The Prom tradition is a significant herald of a student’s tentative steps into the real world and is a very important event in the young adult’s life. Girls at a prom usually wear a semi-formal gown or dress and the boys wear black tie. Some males like to even jazz themselves with colourful cummerbunds.
